How To Make Friends In A New College

Starting a new life in your new college? Are you nervous about going on your new journey and making new friends? Don’t worry, I’ve also been in the same situation before. And I am grateful to have made some lifelong friends during my time in college. So, in this article, I am going to put up some great ways for you to push through that initial shyness and make some good lifelong friends.

So, let’s get friendly!

But, wait, are you thinking about where to find friends? You may be not sure of the places where to strike up a conversation with someone. Don’t worry, I am here to help!

Here I am listing down some of the places in your new college where you can approach to make friends.

1. Classes:

The first place is of course your classes. When it comes to making friends in the classroom, a laboratory or group project works better than normal classes with only lectures. Because it gives you more time to talk and know each other better. The interaction is more among students in labs or group projects. Just don’t forget to smile while striking up a conversation. People are happier to meet you when you seem open and interested.

2. Hostel:

Next to class, the most time a student spends during his college days is in his hostel. Being infamous for providing tasteless food, hostels are a great place to make some lifelong friends. There are many opportunities to make friends here like having a meal in the common dining room, having movie nights with fellow mates, enjoying music together, and many more spontaneous social interactions, etc. So, make use of your stay in the hostel and create some good memories along the way.

3. Casual Hangouts:

Casual hangouts like going out for eating at a restaurant or a café are a great way to build friendships with your peers. Because these types of meet-ups allow you to talk properly with your friends and get to know each other well. So, try to set up casual meet-ups often with your pals.

4. College campus:

Even on your college campus, if you keep an open mind, it’s a great opportunity to meet some really cool people. Just don’t be creepy. For instance, if you are heading in the same way as someone, you can start a conversation. Or while waiting in the hall before meeting with your professor or before class, you can strike up a conversation with your fellow peers. Making friends while playing sports on your college campus is also a great opportunity.

5. Online:

If you happen to be a chat person then you can make use of your college Whatsapp or Facebook group to connect with fellow friends. Introduce yourself properly in the group and try to help others as much as possible. Just don’t be that person who spams the group. It’s not cool.

Now that we are clear about where to find friends, let’s discuss what to talk to the other person to make the conversation interesting.

So, here I am giving you some conversation starters:

1. Where are you from?

When you ask someone where are they from, it shows your interest in learning more about them. It leads to many follow-up topics. You get to know about their native place and understand how diverse our country is.

2. Have you watched any new movies or music lately?

Asking the other person about his movie and music taste tells a lot about them. You get to discover new genres of music and movies. And if both of your tastes match, it’s just the beginning of a friendship with a lot of artistic conversation.

3. Excuse me, what does that word or phrase mean?

If the person is from a different state and he says something you don’t understand, then ask him this question. Everyone loves to talk about their native language, and they will love that you are interested in that.

4. Asking them about their major.

This is a good question to ask when meeting someone in college for the first time. Everyone in college is studying something and asking about their major and why did they choose it is a great conversation starter.

5. Asking their opinion about the food in the college canteen or hostel:

Asking about the food in college is a great conversation topic. Most people consider themselves “foodies”. So, people love to give opinions about food. And by asking about food, you may also get the opportunity to try something delicious you haven’t tasted before.

Thus, we’ve arrived at the end of this article. I am pretty sure now that you are much well informed about the ways how to make friends in your new college. So, apply these tips practically and create some amazing memories along the way.
